In 1830 in Rue de Bac, Paris, the Mother of God appeared to a humble religious sister of the Daughters of Charity, St Catherine Laboure, instructing her to have a medal struck according to the vision she had been shown, that is, the Blessed Virgin Mary standing atop the moon with rays of graces coming forth from her outstretched hands. She is surrounded by the words of a prayer, "O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee". The vision turned and showed the design on the reverse side of the medal. Twelve stars encircling a large "M" from which arose a cross. Below it were two hearts with flames arising from them. Thorns encircle the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a sword pierces the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
